Halifax savings account 'to get carbon rating'

Eco-aware savers are being targeted by an internet savings account that claims to be Europe's first carbon-labelled financial service.

Halifax's Web Saver, currently with 1.1 million accounts, will be accredited by the Carbon Trust.

The carbon footprint of the accounts has been estimated by the trust as being about 204g of greenhouse gas emissions a year and Halifax has pledged to reduce this within two years.

If it does not the carbon reduction label will be removed from the Web Saver product.

Euan Murray, general manager of footprinting at the Carbon Trust, said: "This demonstrates Halifax's willingness to tackle the climate change impacts of its services and help its customers better understand the impact of banking products on climate change."

This pilot scheme will enable customers to see the carbon footprint of their account from initial application.

Research by environmental research agency Trucost showed that business leaders and FTSE companies are carbon-aware and some have made attempts to reduce their footprint.
