Halifax reunites savers with money

Halifax has announced that it has managed to return £14.4 million in money that was lying in dormant accounts to its owners this year.

The bank revealed in March of this year that it had 110,000 dormant accounts containing a total of £44 million.

In response to this, it wrote to customers with money in dormant accounts offering them the chance to claim their money, with adverts placed in the national press and the launch of a dedicated website also playing a part in the campaign.

Head of savings at Halifax Mike Regnier said: "We have made very good progress with our campaign to reunite customers with their funds.

"One-third of our total dormant account balances have already been returned to their owners."

Mr Regnier pledged that the campaign would continue to reunite more people with their cash.

Last month the British Bankers' Association said the number of hits on its dedicated website for those seeking to claim back cash from dormant accounts was set to reach a quarter of a million this year.

It said 20,000 claims had been made this year, three times as many as in 2006.
