Alliance & Leicester: Small businesses are optimistic

The majority of small businesses feel good about their prospects in 2008, the results of a poll suggest.

Less than one in six respondents to the Alliance & Leicester (A&L) survey said they felt negative about how their business would fare in the coming year.

Younger entrepreneurs were the most optimistic age group, with 43 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds feeling positive.

This contrasts with the over 55s, of which a quarter said their outlook was good.

Director of Business Banking Steve Jennings said: "Our research shows that the British entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking.

"However, while it is good news that small businesses are looking at growth and expansion opportunities in 2008, it is important that they closely manage their finances."

He assed that it was good news that at least a quarter of small business owners were planning to review their company's finances in the new year.

Recent research by Abbey revealed that most small business owners would pump unexpected profits back into their enterprises this year.
