Sainsbury's Home Insurance Boxing Day warning

Insurance companies have been braced for a hike in claims over the festive period, Sainsbury's Home Insurance suggests.

Boxing Day 2006 saw a huge increase in the number of claims received on Boxing Day, which amounted to 12 per cent of the total claims received in December.

Reasons include breakages during family parties and the heightened risk of burglary over the Christmas period.

Head of Home Insurance Steve Johnson said: "It's interesting that Boxing Day appears to be the worst day; maybe it's because people are more inclined to let their hair down after the stress and strains of Christmas day."

He said householders should ideally have checked their policies and ensured they had adequate cover but the company autimatically increased its cover by ten per cent over the festive season.

Over-50s insurer RIAS said that well-stocked fridges and freezers cold also leave people out of pocket if they broke down or were accidentally left open.

It also automatically increased its maximum claims by ten per cent.
