Keith Maxwell, motor account manager at More Than, warned that car insurance customers should extend their cover before setting off to a foreign country where they will drive.
"Our advice to customers is that, before you travel abroad, you should phone up your insurer and check [your level of cover]," he said.
People who have a comprehensive UK policy but do not take out a foreign use extension will only have limited cover abroad, Mr Maxwell warned, adding that this could be equivalent to road traffic accident cover in the UK.
He added that depending on the length of time that the car insurance policyholder will want to drive abroad, insurers could offer foreign extension cover either free of charge or at a certain cost.
The Association of British Insurers states that all UK car insurance policies offer minimum cover required by law in other EU countries, or the minimum cover legally required in the UK if that is greater.
