Sainsbury's advises people to shop around for insurance

People thinking of booking holidays in the new year are being advised to shop around in order to find the best deals on travel insurance.

According to Sainsbury's Bank almost 12 million people intend to book a holiday before the end of February 2008, spending an average of £655 per person.

However, while searching for competitive deals on flights and hotels will be a top priority for many, finding competitive deals on travel insurance may not, even though it could save holidaymakers considerable amounts of money.

Indeed, Sainsbury's Bank found that some 28 per cent of those booking their holidays in the next two months will buy travel insurance through their travel agent or holiday company, which could work out more expensive than if they were to look elsewhere.

Steve Johnson, head of Sainsbury's Travel Insurance, said: "While it's easy to get excited about shopping around for destinations, resorts and even flights, travel insurance should not be ignored or accepted as merely an add-on."

Separate research from Sainsbury's Bank shows that 11 per cent of travellers did not take out any travel insurance at all the last time they went on holiday abroad.ADNFCR-323-ID-18409353-ADNFCR
