Legal & General insurance: More home safety needed

A new Legal & General insurance survey has found that Britons could do more to ensure their homes are secure.

Although 30 per cent confirmed they have a security alarm, more than half admitted that they have never checked that alarm to make sure it is functioning properly.

The research also indicates that 50 per cent of respondents have never checked their property's wiring, 33 per cent have never checked their loft insulation and 28 per cent had never checked their boiler.

Elaine Parkes, head of technical services for Legal & General's general insurance business, said that "it is clear" that there is a need for more consumer awareness of regular home checks.

"A few simple checks could mean that our properties are safer and so avoid the need to make a claim under a household insurance policy," she added.

In December, Sainsbury's warned that Boxing Day could see a large rise in the number of home insurance claims made in Britain.
