Abbey Mortgages: First-time buyers have to wait

Commenting on the decision by the Bank of England's monetary policy committee (MPC) to maintain the base interest rate at 5.5 per cent, Abbey Mortgages said it means that first-time buyers may decide to wait to buy a property.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of Abbey Mortgages, said that those who want to get on the property ladder may be tempted "to hold out a little longer" to see if the rate is cut in the next couple of months.

She also suggested that people who are considering choosing a tracker mortgage use caution, as there could be rate rises in the next two years.

Instead, Ms Audhlam-Gardiner recommended fixed-rate deals as the "preferred option for more cautious borrowers".

"There are some excellent fixed-rate deals to be had in the market," she added.

The MPC's decision comes on the heels of much speculation about whether it would choose to cut rates again; however, some experts have suggested the committee is waiting to review inflation data in February.
