Ski insurance 'should be checked carefully'

Those who are planning to take part in winter sports on holiday are advised to check their ski insurance carefully by Defaqto.

Mike Powell, principal consultant of general insurance at Defaqto, said that there is more to consider than personal liability, medical expenses and cover for ski equipment.

"In this time of disturbed weather patterns, it's worth checking you have realistic cover for piste closure and travel to an alternative location," he explained.

According to Defaqto, almost 80 per cent of winter sports travel insurance policies will compensate people who are delayed by an avalanche, while nearly half pay out if snowfall is not adequate at a ski resort.

Skiers could receive between £200 and £600 for insufficient snowfall, depending on the policy, the firm said.

Research from the Post Office published in December reveals that Borovets in Bulgaria is the cheapest destination for skiing.
