Figures from the insurer estimate that a collective £4.7 billion budgeting shortfall is accumulated by homeowners who do not adequately estimate their costs.
Kitchen overhauls were revealed as the type of project which was most likely to go over budget, followed by bathrooms and extensions.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said that the findings show that it is "all too easy to get carried away" when making improvements.
He added that it is vital that homeowners "check that all tradesmen they employ have adequate insurance to cover for any damage caused to their belongings".
Previous research from Halifax Home Insurance estimated that up to £350 million worth of damage is caused by Britons who attempt to copy DIY TV shows at home.
