Co-operative Bank: Britons to spend on greener homes

A new study by Co-operative Bank reveals that many homeowners are planning to make eco-friendly improvements to their properties.

Most respondents had already carried out at least one green change, with 66 per cent saying that they recycle household waste, 61 per cent claiming to turn off appliances instead of leaving them on stand-by and 60 per cent employing energy-saving light bulbs.

At the same time, in the future, 11 per cent would like to install a way to capture rainwater and seven per cent are exploring the possibility of adding solar panels.

John Barker, head of mortgages at the Co-operative Bank, said that the findings show that people are heeding warnings about green issues.

"Houses are one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK and taking steps to improve the environmental impact of homes is something that we strongly believe should be encouraged," he added.

In December, the Co-operative Bank cut its mortgage rates by 0.25 per cent.
