Halifax Home Insurance warn of kitchen nightmares

Budding chefs inspired to cook up a storm by the likes of Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver are being urged to take care in the kitchen to avoid making costly insurance claims.

Figures from Halifax Home Insurance show that around 84 kitchen fires occur in the UK every day, 88 per cent of which are caused by carelessness with cooking appliances such as deep fat fryers.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "It's great to see TV stars getting the nation excited about cooking, but we are urging people who do take it up as a hobby to take extra care in the kitchen."

The data reveals that the average kitchen fire causes around £9,264 worth of damage. With one occurring every 17 minutes this means they cost Britons some £280 million a year to clear up.

But it seems it is not just the risk of accidents that makes the kitchen the most expensive room in the house. Separate research from Halifax shows that 25 per cent of all kitchen home improvement projects go over budget as a result of costly fixtures and fittings.
