Council tax 'is most despised levy'

Britons view council tax as their most hated type of tax, according to a survey.

Some 79 per cent of people polled by MSN Money said that council tax was worse than fuel duty, inheritance tax VAT and stamp duty, among others.

Alastair Bruce, MSN Money Editor, said that it was "not that surprising" to read the council tax was so despised.

"The result reflects people's displeasure with the level of service they receive in return for their monthly contribution - and the rapid and often unexplained rate of recent increases," he remarked.

Mr Bruce concluded that the findings may suggest that Britons are looking for a "fairer and more transparent" system for council tax.

This past summer, Halifax reported that council tax had increased three times higher than RPI inflation over the past decade.
