Caution urged on mobile deals

Customers who sign up to a mobile phone cashback deal often have problems claiming their money back, it was suggested today.

Frank Shepherd, a spokesman for the Office of Fair Trading-backed Consumer Direct helpline, said there is anecdotal evidence to suggest widespread problems with such contracts.

In some cases the companies that offered the cashback deals have gone out of business and left consumers to pay for the contracts but with no hope of reclaiming any cash, Mr Shepherd explained.

Other consumers have found the terms and conditions of such offers "onerous" and that making a successful claim for any money back is very difficult, he continued.

Mr Shepherd had a simple piece of advice for anyone considering a mobile phone cashback deal, warning: "Be aware that a lot of people have had problems. Consider whether you're able to afford the monthly charge without the cashback."

The recommendation comes just weeks after consumer group Which? called for mobile phone cashback deals to be banned.
