Travel insurance 'best purchased in advance'

British consumers are being urged to purchase travel insurance when they book their holiday in order to ensure that they are fully covered.

Two out of three UK travellers (623 per cent) are missing out on valuable cancellation cover by booking insurance at the last minute, leaving them out of pocket if their holiday is unavoidably cancelled, Moneysupermarket.com reports.

According to the price comparison website, almost 47 per cent of travellers wait until the last week before their holiday before arranging cover and 63 per cent organises insurance just two weeks before their trip.

Peter Gerrard, Moneysupermarket.com head of insurance research, commented: "It is worth noting you may not be covered if you have cancelled your holiday because of any pre-existing medical conditions, the death or illness of a pet, or if you have any travel phobias, stress or anxiety."

Mr Gerrard points out that increased risk of airport strike action and political unrest in Kenya and other countries makes it even more important to book travel insurance in advance. Cancellation policies should be checked carefully to ensure that they cover the full cost of a holiday in the event of a cancellation.

STA Travel has emphasised that it is "imperative" to check that a travel insurance policy is held before setting off on holiday, with options now available to suit every traveller.
