AA Insurance: Backpackers carry expensive items

Reflecting consumers' greater reliance on communication and entertainment technology, AA Travel Insurance found that the average backpack now contains goods worth approximately £450.
Three quarters of respondents told the firm that they viewed their mobile phone as an essential item, while seven out of ten insisted they would not leave their home without a digital camera to record their experiences.
And despite the growing value of backpackers' possessions, AA Travel Insurance head Christian Young cautioned that many travellers still seek to abide by tight budgets and, in some cases, may consider cutting corners on accommodation or insurance.
"It's understandable that modern travellers want to be able to stay in touch and be able to record memories of the people and places they see," he said. "However, with all these technological treasures in their bags it has never been more important for backpackers to ensure they are fully insured so that they can explore with peace of mind."
STA Travel also recently emphasised the need to take out adequate travel insurance when travelling abroad.
