British spending trends revealed

The proportion of the average weekly household budget that goes towards fuel and power has been cut in half since 1957, according to new figures.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) research reveals that gas and electricity have overtaken coal as the largest fuel sources in UK homes during the last 50 years.

In addition to this, the ONS suggests that consumers now spend five per cent of their weekly budget on clothing and footwear - compared to the ten per cent recorded in 1957.

These statistics have been highlighted by the government to mark five decades of the Expenditure and Food Survey, which was formerly known as the Family Expenditure Survey.

Apparently, the annual study is an important resource for businesses, government departments and academia. It also provides data used in the retail price index.

National Savings & Investments said this week that British people have increased their savings 39 fold in real terms since the early 1960s, while levels have reportedly gone up by 31 per cent since 2000.
