Young drivers 'should look for insurance deals'

After a number of service providers took deals off the market for young people, it has been suggested that they ought to search for the most viable car insurance deals.

Moreover, young drivers should not try and fool the authorities by using their parents' insurance if they are the main motorist, the Association of British Insurers has said.

The main concern, suggested spokesman at the body Malcolm Tarling, is that youngsters could be forced to drive without any insurance at all.

If the government was to cut down on the number of accident rates seen among this demographic, then the sector could become more "competitive", he noted.

"But you cannot get away from the fact that you have to charge a premium to reflect the risk and for some insurers - not all, but some - they will find that that risk is just so high," he commented.

The road safety charity Brake has recently said that it is more probable for younger drivers to be involved in accidents on the roads, as 151 between the ages of 16-19 were killed in 2004.
