Nationwide credit card warning to holidaymakers

People going on holiday should not be fooled by fees on their credit cards when abroad, Nationwide Building Society has said.

Skiers should be especially worried about charges - called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) - as this is a popular time of year for such trips, the bank noted.

DCC refers to the practice in which a retailer can determine the exchange rate when individuals opt to pay by pounds sterling.

Over the course of the same skiing season last year, people "wasted" more than £34,000 in only four resorts in Europe via the method, Nationwide added.

Jeremy Wood, director at Nationwide, noted that people ought to be aware of any potential extra fees.

"With over 1.3 million UK people hitting the slopes last year and £34,000 being wasted in just four European ski resorts, [DCC] has the potential to affect a large number of people," he commented.

Nationwide has said that the amount of customers paying in sterling when abroad rose by 120 per cent last year, reports the Telegraph.
