Abbey: Fixed-rate deals are popular

Fixed-rate mortgages are currently almost four times more popular than variable rates, Abbey Mortgages (AM) research suggests.

Its Remortgage Tracker survey found that 10.3 million people would opt for a fixed-rate product of they were remortgaging there and then.

This contrasts with 2.8 million who would choose a tracker mortgage.

In addition, Abbey found that 2.4 million people, or seven per cent homeowners, would choose a fixed-rate term of ten years, with1.8 million (six per cent) looking longer term with a 15-year deal.

Head of AM Nici Audhlam-Gardiner said: "The research suggests that continued talk of economic gloom has had two effects on borrowers - they are either determined to take the more stable option or are confused about the best mortgage option to take."

In a speech to guests at the recent EEF Manufacturer's dinner, chancellor Alistair Darling said the government wanted to see an increase in the number of foxed-rate products available.ADNFCR-323-ID-18460372-ADNFCR
