Alliance & Leicester Isa offer

A best buy version of the Alliance & Leicester Direct Isa (individual savings account) has been launched due to popular demand, the provider has said.

The Alliance & Leicester Direct Isa Issue 4 offers an annual equivalent rate of 6.25 per cent gross pa, which includes a one per cent bonus until May 31st 2009.

Customers can invest from £1 to £3,000 in the current tax year, with the maximum amount rising to £3,600 after April 6th this year.

Commenting on the Alliance & Leicester Isa, Ewan Edwards, manager for savings and investments at the bank, said: "Our Direct Isas have proved to be extremely popular, offering great rates and the convenience of 24-hour access."

He added that taxpayers who want to save money would have to find a savings account offering 7.5 per cent interest to match that offered by the Alliance & Leicester Direct Isa Issue 4.

Last week, Moneyfacts urged consumers to consider their Isa options as the savings market has an "extremely competitive nature".

Analyst Michelle Slade said: "There are some excellent [Isa] deals to be had."
