AA health insurance warning for travellers

The AA has reminded people not to forget to take out a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) when travelling on the continent.

Formerly known as an E111 form, the EHIC is a reciprocal agreement with the NHS which allows holidaymakers to get treatment in EU countries free or at low cost.

However, Ian Crowder, public relations manager at the AA, warned that standards may vary depending on the country you are in.

He added that purchasing travel insurance is "always a good idea" to ensure that you and your party are fully covered.

Gapyear.com estimates that 25 per cent of young travellers set of underinsured or uninsured, opening themselves and their parents up to significant financial risks.

With 230,000 people aged 18-24 taking a gap year, that represents a significant number of risk-takers.
