Londoners fall victim to credit card fraud

Apacs, the UK payments association, said today that the capital city's large size and population are the reasons why it has recently been confirmed at the UK's worst city for credit and debit card fraud.

Mark Bowerman, a spokesperson for the body, said: "London is the fraud hotspot in the UK but the fact of the matter is there are more cards in issue in London and therefore more transactions and more retail outlets in London."

His comments come after a survey was released by the CPP Group showing that almost a third of Londoners have previously been the victim of card fraud.

Mr Bowerman emphasises that Londoners themselves are not to blame, saying that card holders would take the same steps to protect themselves and minimise risk whether they are "in London or Yorkshire".

Birmingham previously had the dubious honour of being the country's worst city for debit and credit card fraud, but it has now been overtaken.

Figures released from Apacs last year show that total card fraud losses increased by 26 per cent in the six months leading up to June 2007, compared with the same period in 2006.
