Legal & General insurance finds Brits are eco-keen

New research from Legal & General's general insurance business has found that 96 per cent of eco-friendly Brits are already taking steps or are planning to take steps to help the environment.

Some 78 per cent of people are turning off lights in empty rooms, while a further 71 per cent are trying not to leave our televisions on standby.

It also found that people were looking for homes that are more energy-efficient, with 59 per cent of Britons saying they would consider buying a house with solar panels, 40 per cent preffering to purchase a carbon neutral house and 33 per cent looking to buy a property made from locally sourced materials.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business said that increasing awareness of environmental issues among the British public "could potentially change the look of our homes in the future".

She added that for those considering "more major modifications, such as solar panelling" it is important to check the details of their home contents insurance cover.

A recent study from thinkproperty.com found that nearly 70 per cent of UK homeowners would modify their properties to make them 'green' if the government provided incentives to do so, demonstrating the increasing awareness of the impact of domestic energy consumption on the environment in the UK.
