AA Insurance warns travellers not to pay twice

The AA has said that it is not necessary for people to take out baggage cover when travelling, so long as their home contents insurance already allows them to take personal possessions out of the home.

Public relations manager Ian Crowder advised holidaymakers to check with their insurer to see if their personal possessions are insured outside of the UK, before they head off on their travels.

He added that for most policies, cover for personal possessions will "include all your property – baggage, camera [and] personal effects", so baggage cover is an unnecessary expense.

Mr Crowder also raised the issue of how long people's home contents policy will cover them for if they leave their house unattended on a long holiday.

He said that some insurers may want to "impose special terms" if the homeowner is away for more than 30 days.

Recent research by Liverpool Victoria found that nearly 15 million Brits are advertising to burglars by leaving valuable possessions on windowsills.

For example, 68 per cent of homes in the UK leave televisions, computers, antiques and jewellery on display.
