It is one of only three providers to receive the top rating so far.
The product, Peace for Mind Home Insurance, offers unlimited sum insurance for buildings and contents cover and for the cost of temporary accommodation.
Students' belongings are included as standard with contents cover up to £5,000, while a 24-hour emergency helpline is provided for customers.
Ricky Okey, managing director of Abbey For Intermediaries said that mortgage brokers should now "feel confident" about selling its insurance to clients, as the award has confirmed that it is "a top product and not simply a labelled add-on".
He added: "The consistently high rating received from Defaqto highlights Abbey's commitment to providing and maintaining high-quality products for intermediaries."
Defaqto's reports use a benchmarking process on features and costs to compare and rate products across financial institutions.
