Insurance "particularly important" for industrious travellers

A spokesperson for STA Travel has urged for gap year travellers who are planning on learning a new skill, such as cooking or kite surfing, to ensure they take out insurance.

There are a number of reasons why it is particularly important in these cases, she said, including the increased costs of repatriating an adventurous traveller back from a remote location.

She added that adventure activities, such as surfing or mountain-climbing, "carry more risk", which makes the inclusion of private healthcare within the policy an absolute necessity.

"Learning holidays are life changing but the initial cost can be quite high; it is imperative that the passenger covers themselves against potential costs if they were forced to cancel due to circumstances outside their control," the spokesperson warned.

Currently 25 per cent of young travellers set off uninsured or underinsured, putting themselves and their parents' financial security at risk.
