AA car insurance advice for accidents abroad

Travellers who are involved in accidents while driving in a foreign country should immediately phone their insurer, AA has said.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager at AA, said that those who are "unfortunate enough" to suffer an accident abroad should take similar measures to what they would do in the UK.

Taking pictures of the scene of the accident, writing down registration numbers, noting the makes of the vehicles and asking witnesses for their names and addresses are all steps that should be undertaken, he advised.

"Call your insurance company immediately, too - you will of course have remembered to take the number with you," Mr Crowder added.

He also recommended that it would be a good idea to make sure sunhats, sun cream and water are in the car if travelling to a hot country, as drivers may have to wait "for ages" for breakdown help to arrive.

Around three million British motorists head to the European continent by ferry or via the channel tunnel each year, according to the RAC Foundation.
