UK travellers 'need to watch where they spend their money'

Brits travelling abroad have been warned to make sure they are buying from a reputable source before they flash their cash, Apacs, the UK payments association, has warned.

A ruling by the House of Lords in October last year ensured that UK consumers would continue to be protected when buying goods between the value of £100 and £30,000 on their credit card overseas, but claiming the money back can be a hassle.

Mark Bowerman, a spokesman for Apacs, advised travellers that it may be "beneficial to use a credit card because you have that extra protection that you do not have with a debit card".

Customers can approach their card issuer first if they want to get their money back, but Mr Bowerman recommends approaching the retailer first.

If, however, they have gone bust, he advises people to "approach your card issuer, explain the situation to them and then they are liable for that amount of expense so you are refunded by them".
