Direct Line Home Insurance offers advice on braving the storm

Direct Line Home Insurance is offering households advice on dealing with the onslaught of bad weather that is predicted to hit the UK over the next few days.

Coastal areas are particularly at risk, but the storms have already caused a number of roads to flood and the Met Office has put most of the UK on high alert.

It is advising people to secure any loose items, such as bikes, sheds and garden furniture and to check their roof and gutters for signs of weakness.

Direct Line Home Insurance is also urging people to ensure that they know how to turn off their electricity, water and gas and to keep a torch handy in case of a power cut.

Andrew Lowe, the company's head of home insurance, revealed that its emergency home response team is "already providing assistance to customers whose property may have been affected by today's bad weather", in order to get claims processed as quickly as possible.

Sainsbury's Insurance revealed last week that an estimated 3,250 people could claim on their home insurance in the wake of last week's earthquake.
