Halifax: Who wears the financial trousers?

New research from Halifax has found that while 57 per cent of British men claim to be the main financial decision maker in their household, only six per cent of women believe their partners make money decisions for them.

Instead, 36 per cent of women say they hold the purse-strings, even though only three per cent of men admit to letting their partners control the cash.

Despite this conflicting information from the two sexes, Halifax's survey revealed half of British households prefer to share financial decisions equally, particularly those aged 25 to 34.

It found that income also affected how people deal with their cash, with half of all Brits with a household income above £25,000 making financial decisions equally, but only a third of those earning between £7,500 and £15,000 sharing the load.

Jaedon Green, head of mortgage development at Halifax, said: "No matter who holds the purse strings, whether it's you, your partner or both, it's important to seek sound financial advice to aid your decision."

Earlier today Halifax Insurance issued advice to homeowners on protecting their property against flood and storm damage.
