Sainsbury's Insurance: Buildings cover vital in stormy times

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has warned that the 1.78 million homeowners without buildings protection could be facing a hefty bill, as storms continue to batter the UK.

A further 656,000 did not know if they had cover or not, according to the bank.

Female homeowners were less likely to have cover than men, with six per cent of women admitting to being without buildings insurance compared to four per cent of men.

The two groups at either end of the age spectrum - 25 to 34s and over-65s - were the least likely to have buildings cover, with eight per cent of people from each group not having any.

Most said they had not purchased cover because they felt it was not necessary, rather than because they could not afford it.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said: "Thousands of homes could be at risk from storms this week so it's alarming to see so many without buildings insurance."

The Met Office has issued warnings of severe gales with gusts of 65 to 75mph, particularly in Northern Ireland, northern and eastern England, north Wales, and the Midlands.
