Alliance & Leicester: Budget 'mixed bag' for small business

The director of business banking at Alliance and Leicester has praised some of the initiatives that Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in yesterday's budget to help small businesses, but says more needs to be done.

Steve Jennings welcomed the announcement that £12.5 million would be set aside to attract female entrepreneurs, which he described as "good news for the UK economy".

He also supported the chancellor's decision to provide an extra £60 million in funding to the small firms loans guarantee scheme, which he said would provide "crucial support" to new businesses.

However, Mr Jennings warned that the additional 2p per litre fuel duty that is due to be charged from October will "test the resilience" of the small business community.

The director also warned that the abolishment of the capital gains taper relief system "continues to be a major concern".

Recent research from Direct Line revealed that of 600 small businesses owners surveyed, 34 per cent were not aware of the proposed changes following the pre-Budget announcement in November 2007.
