Brits donate £1bn on cards

New research from Apacs, the UK payments association, has revealed that Brits donated over £1 billion on plastic cards in 2007.

By transaction volume, that represents an increase of 23 per cent from 2006, from 18.5 million to 22.6 million.

Some 2.9 million debit cards and 1.3 million credit cards were used to donate money to charity, which the average amount given standing at £44.75.

People can also use affinity cards to give money to charity without incurring any extra cost, as the provider makes a donation to the particular cause linked to that card.

Despite the increased popularity of card donations, direct debits are still the most popular way of giving money to charity.

Sandra Quinn, director or communications at Apacs, said that although "Wednesday's Budget announcement confirmed that charities will continue to reclaim gift aid at 22 per cent … a lower rate will be introduced in the future", so people should aim to give generously.

Last month the organisation found that Christmas spending on credit and debit cards grew at a slower rate than it had done in previous years.
