Business confidence falls again

According to the latest Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets Business Barometer, firms' confidence in the UK economy has fallen for the sixth consecutive month.

The net balance of businesses feeling more, rather than less optimistic about the future of the economy has dropped to minus 23 per cent, the lowest level since the survey began six years ago.

Some 51 per cent of firms said they were more pessimistic than three months ago, compared with 28 per cent who reported feeling more positive.

However in relation to their own businesses, companies were more optimistic - 58 per cent were expecting business activity to increase over the next year, while ten per cent were anticipating a decline.

Distribution and industrial firms reported increased confidence, while companies in the service sector were significantly less optimistic about their own activity.

Trevor Williams, chief economist at Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets, said: "Although this year is likely to be a challenging one for many businesses, we expect confidence to improve in the second half and economic growth to accelerate in 2009."

Research released recently by the bank found that consumers are unsure about the future of the UK economy and are concerned about rising inflation.
