Sainsbury's: Insurance companies need the honest truth

Sainsbury's Finance has warned people that they could invalidate their insurance policies if they knowingly give false information to their provider, after its research revealed that 1.12 million people do so.

A further 12.59 million people admitted to making a "best guess" at information when taking out cover.

Most were likely to give false information when applying for home insurance, followed by car insurance and travel insurance.

The main reason cited by survey respondents for their dishonest ways was that they simply did not have time to check the correct information, while some said it took to long and four per cent admitted to wanting to get a cheaper premium.

Perhaps surprisingly 16 to 24-year-olds were the most likely to be honest when applying for home insurance, while the over-65's were most prone to telling porkies.

Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury's Finance said although giving false information "may seem like a good idea in an effort to save time, it could become a real headache later".

Last week, Sainsbury's revealed that up to 1.78 million homeowners do not have buildings insurance, despite recent bad weather conditions.
