Halifax Insurance warns DIY disasters could prove costly

New research from Halifax has found that nearly a third of men feel pressured by their partners to do DIY, despite the fact that 37 per cent of them dislike it and only make home improvements out of a sense of duty.

Although some men may not be keen on DIY, almost half of the women surveyed reported that being handy with a toolkit was a highly desirable trait in a prospective partner.

However, with the bank holiday approaching and many people planning to make home improvements over the long weekend, Halifax is warning that a botched job could invalidate their home insurance policies.

A quarter of the men they questioned had attempted electrical wiring at home, while 24 per cent had tried to fit a new kitchen, despite the fact that many of them had little or no qualifications or experience.

Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said: "Trying to tackle certain areas you are not qualified for such as electrics or plumbing could invalidate your home insurance policy, leaving you liable for any subsequent damage."

Yesterday Sainsbury's warned homeowners that knowingly giving false information when applying for insurance could invalidate their policy.
