Saga Home Insurance warns DIY enthusiasts to check their cover

New research from Saga Home Insurance has revealed that DIY can be a dangerous game, with one in four people injuring themselves while undertaking home improvements.

That may explain why this peculiarly British hobby is declining in popularity, with over half of all homeowners choosing to outsource their household jobs to partners, family members or hired tradespeople.

Most homeowners (29 per cent) turned to their partners for help, which supports recent research from Halifax which found that a third of men dislike doing DIY, but feel pressurised into it by their wives or girlfriends.

Around one in five people took the sensible route and called in the professionals - others may wish they had done this earlier, with one in 20 DIY fans having to get a tradesman in to repair the damage they have done.

Saga is advising people to check they have full accidental damage cover added to their buildings and contents insurance before they attempt any home renovations themselves.
