Saga Insurance: Summertime is peak season for burglaries

Insurance company Saga has warned homeowners to be extra vigilant in the coming weeks, as studies have shown that more burglaries happen when the clocks go forward.

The head of communications at the company remarked that people can become "less security conscious" as the evenings get lighter.

Paul Green also noted that during the occasional balmy summer's evening people are more likely to spend time outside and leave windows and doors open, which can be an invitation to burglars.

He advised homeowners to ensure any windows are closed when they are not in the house and to bring as many items as possible indoors.

Mr Green also revealed that almost half of all burglaries happen when a home is empty, so he suggested that holidaymakers should "try to arrange for a neighbour, friend or family member to visit your house every couple of days to check everything is OK and to make it look like it is occupied".

Earlier this month Saga Insurance warned people to avoid doing any adventurous DIY themselves over the bank holiday weekend, after it found that one in four people have injured themselves whilst undertaking home improvements.
