Alliance & Leicester mortgage product is withdrawn

Alliance & Leicester has announced that it is withdrawing its two-year fixed-rate mortgage product, after it received a high volume of interest.

Richard Taylor, head of mortgage products at the bank, said: "Over the past few days we have seen a high demand for our 4.99 per cent two-year fixed-rate product and therefore we have taken the decision to remove it from the range."

He cited a desire to "manage the volume of business we are receiving" as the primary reason behind the decision.

The news comes after MoneyFacts.co.uk found that over the last month alone, the number of mortgage products available across residential and buy-to-let markets has declined from 7,726 to 5,700 - a drop of 2026.

A spokesperson for the website noted that in recent weeks small building societies in particular have suffered, with many being forced to withdraw their products entirely or restrict their lending to direct business or local areas.
