Halifax Home Insurance warning about garden security

Halifax Home Insurance has warned homeowners to be cautious about the security of their gardens this summer, when thefts are more likely to take place.

Last year, garden thefts rose by 52 per cent in the summer compared with statistics from the winter, research from the insurer reveals.

Its figures also indicate that the average claim for garden theft has risen by 27 per cent during the past five years.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said that homeowners should not neglect to make sure their outdoor property is as secure as what is inside.

"Items thieves typically look for include patio furniture, bicycles, garden ornaments and barbecues," he advised.

Mr Rochester added that people should ensure their home insurance policy covers potential garden theft.

Recently, Nationwide Insurance also warned homeowners about the importance of insuring their gardens during the spring and summer months.
