The company warns that some households do not maintain their smoke or burglar alarms and this could impact on their ability to claim upon the event of an incident.
While 80 per cent of people polled have a smoke alarm and 30 per cent a burglar alarm, more than half have never checked the latter.
L&G say alarms should be maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations, normally annually.
Window locks should also be checked as well as outbuilding security, such as rotting frames and rusty locks.
General, good home maintenance should remove any danger that a claim will be knocked back, the company said.
Elaine Parkes, head of technical services for L&G's general insurance business, said: "These simple checks should give customers confidence that their property is safe and secure and more importantly, covered by meeting the terms of their policy."
Home Office statistics for 2006 to 2007 found there was a one per cent decrease in household burglary in this period.
