Travel insurance 'does not always include' baggage cover

Following the news that supermodel Naomi Campbell has been arrested for assaulting a police officer after she was told her baggage had gone missing, independent financial research company Defaqto has warned travellers to ensure their luggage is insured before they head abroad.

It looked at a range of single-trip insurance policies to determine where cover is provided for lost and delayed baggage and found that 14 per cent of policies do not offer cover for delayed luggage.

That is despite the fact that travellers may have to fork out for a change of clothes, hygiene products or even medication before their baggage is returned to them.

Its research also revealed that 40 per cent of single-trip policies only provide a maximum cover of £100 or less for delayed baggage.

Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance and Defaqto, advised: "It is important to check what is provided by a travel insurance policy before purchasing cover."

Hundreds of passengers were left waiting for hours for their baggage, or boarded planes while their luggage remained on the ground last week at Heathrow's new Terminal 5.
