Insurance is 'essential' for travellers

With 32 per cent of graduates choosing to head off abroad in search of adventure before they decide on a career, STA Travel is warning all would-be backpackers that travel insurance is essential.

A spokesman for the firm said that travel insurance is an "absolute must for any traveller to ensure they are covered for every eventuality".

The company also recommended that travellers plan as much of their trip as possible in advance, but suggested that they could also subscribe to live RSS feeds on their mobile phone, which provide flight offers and other relevant information.

According to a recent j-to-i report, 29 per cent of people planned to quit their jobs in 2007 to take a gap year - an increase of ten per cent from the previous year and double the number from 2006.

The number of people looking for travel insurance is also on the up, with an American Express poll conducted in November 2007 finding that 59 per cent of travel agents had seen a rise in the number of enquiries about insurance that year.
