Direct Line Car Insurance: Vehicles 'could be a magnet' for identity thieves

New research from Direct Line Car Insurance has found that one in ten UK car owners could be putting themselves at risk of identity theft by leaving sensitive documents in full view.

In a survey, ten per cent of respondents admitted to forgetting to remove sensitive documents such as bills and statements from view, which could prove a magnet to thieves.

In addition, a further 12 per cent estimated they had more than £350 worth of valuables left on the front or rear seats, while six per cent revealed they sometimes forget to lock their car altogether.

Jennifer Culley, spokesperson for Direct Line Car Insurance, said: "Car owners need to think twice before they lock up and walk away from their vehicles to ensure they are not leaving valuables or sensitive documents on display."

Yesterday, Sainsbury's released a study which suggested British motorists could be missing out on £286 million by failing to haggle over the price of their new car.
