Abbey Banking: Sensible shopping could save food and money

New research from Abbey has revealed that British households throw away an estimated £218 million worth of food every week, after misjudging the amount they will consume.

On average, Brits throw out six per cent of their food shopping a week because they have failed to use the items before their sell-by-date.

Young people were revealed to be the worst culprits, chucking out ten per cent of their unwanted groceries at an average cost of £7.31.

People who do their shopping on a daily basis were also more likely to throw items out than those who do a weekly supermarket run.

Steve Shore, director of Abbey Banking, suggested that in the current volatile financial climate, saving a few pounds by shopping more accurately could be useful.

"If you put that away in a high interest account, such as Abbey's eight per cent in credit account, you could put it towards something else," he said.

Abbey recently announced that it has raised the rates on its 50 plus saver accounts for those who put away large sums of money, to 6.5 per cent.
