Saga Home Insurance: Retirees 'forced' to move

A new study by Saga Home Insurance has found that nearly a third of retirees move areas once they stop working.

The reality contrasts with people's expectations - only eight per cent of those facing retirement reported that they are definitely intending to move.

Saga suggests that with living costs soaring, many people to not have adequate funds to cover a settled and comfortable retirement.

Its research also revealed that peace and quiet, good shopping facilities and a friendly neighbourhood are key features they retirees look for when choosing a new home.

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, commented: "Retirement should be an opportunity for people to enjoy pursuits that they have dreamt of throughout their working life … It is a worrying trend that these aspirations of a settled retirement are being ruined by the need to downsize."

Around a fifth of respondents in a recent survey from Alliance & Leicester said they viewed turning 50 as a chance to try new and exciting things.
