Joe Wiggins stated that subscribing to such insurance puts homeowners in an "ideal situation" should they suffer loss of income for any reason.
He suggested that most people do not "fully appreciate" how short a time sick pay from employers tends to last and that many would struggle with mortgage repayments should they become unemployed or be off from work due to a long-term illness.
For those looking to purchase mortgage protection insurance, he advised: "Speak to a financial adviser as they are the experts and can help you navigate the protection market with confidence."
Around 20 per cent of households had mortgage payment protection insurance in 2006, according to research from the Association of British insurers.
