Abbey Business Banking: Youth and energy will help entrepreneurs succeed

Abbey Business Banking is advising would-be entrepreneurs to start young and be prepared to put in long hours if they want to succeed.

It found that of the UK's small business owners, 87,000 per cent were still a 'junior' when they decided to set out on their own.

By contrast, only one per cent of senior managers took the risk of leaving their existing job and starting out on their own.

According to Abbey's research, the average age that Britain's 484,300 entrepreneurs started trading was 35 - but most wished they had begun earlier, with 29 the preferred age.

The boundless energy of youth may also be beneficial to those looking to start their own businesses, as 22 per cent of entrepreneurs work 60 hours or more a week.

Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey Business Banking, commented: "You need energy to run your own business but the great thing about it, is that it is ultimately very rewarding."

The volatile economic climate means this is a difficult time for fledgling businesses, but a recent survey of Welsh small and medium-sized enterprises by accountancy practice Mazuma found that most are positive about their current trade.
