Drunkenness 'could invalidate an insurance policy'

As many Brits start looking towards summer holidays abroad or festivals, Moneysupermarket.com has cautioned people that they are less likely to receive a payout from an insurance company is they have an accident as a result of being drunk.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research for the comparison site, said that for loss of personal possessions, the inebriation of the owner should not make too much difference.

For medical claims however, if a person injures themselves because they are drunk, their insurance company is unlikely to pay out.

But, he said, if they had consumed a small amount of alcohol and were the victim of something that was not their fault, such as a wall collapsing, then they would have a stronger claim.

In a survey conducted by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 41 per cent of people admitted to drinking far more abroad than they do at home.
